No wonder then that they’ve covered Merciless classic from their The Awakening album ‘Denied Birth’ and that most of their influences seem to come not only from the 80’s but from the then bleak industrial-like German birth place of Sodom and Kreator. “With the exception of Slayer, I always felt like 80’s German thrash metal was much more deathly and abrasive, which speaks more to us. Pleasure to Kill, Riders of Doom – there aren't many US bands that have records worth comparing to these! I have to confess though that it's important not to understate the effect Repulsion has always had on me... Most of their really classic songs are just thrash metal riffs played at 45 RPM. Total death!” All three musicians - Spencer from Blaspherian joined them on bass after the recording - may have roots in grindcore (PLF), war metal (Morbosidad) and evil death metal (Blaspherian) yet Summary Execution at Dawn lives in its own time frame. With some songs harking back as far as 2010 and a recording slowly chipped away at since 2015, the result is 34 minutes of death/thrash executed at rabid speed, set in medieval times when “life was cheap” and tyrants and cruel wizards ruled the earth. AKHLYS - The Dreaming (Review)

 
Original and complex metal. Actually very good if you let the sound lead you into this chaotic but controlling universe a new world will slowly open, only for those who are patient and dare to enter the realm AKHLYS create on ‘Dreaming’ if you like bands like Aborym and Mysticum you will probably like this.

I honestly couldn’t stop listening to’The Dreaming’ before it was done because I wondered if they had the same views as myself and I was right about that one.

I’m very amazed by their use of synths and sounds here. It’s well done and executed for the listener to learn how to destroy their own minds while listening to the album which is more deadly than witchcraft. I had a poetic experience to it. You will not be the same when these guys are done.
It’s like magic and it’s a deep and powerful story to digest and it slowly makes you feel better about yourself and the way it will be.

It’s quite interesting and original but it demands a lot from the listeners and it’s surely not a party album unless it’s a closed one filled with psychedelic stuff and there should probably be a “safe place“ as many people will have to listen to happy tunes after running scared away from AKHLYS - The Dreaming as they can’t believe they were able to walk into these wasteland of vast lands and cold world war with steel metal and hell truly appears to be a good way to go back to.

An experience on the borderline of a dying world is what I see. The fall of civilization as we know it is what they create and this is the darkest part, so you better listen to the entire album or you’ll end up at your mom lap crying. 

This is darkness in beauty or beauty in darkness. You decide what portrait you want to paint and then you will see what you gotta do with your life.

There are some moments on ‘The Dreaming’ that are indescribable beautiful and there are some moments of indescribable darkness.
It’s a beautiful dream for those who catch the drift.
The only question I have is with I listen to it a lot, or is it just a one time experience?
Only time will tell..
Listeners decide what they wanna give it..

I recommend you to listen to it all, but this is not your everyday album.

Arvas (NOR) - Equanimity

Arvas has taken a step further for sure.

They have more or less left their previous black metal roots and taken a step into more straightforward metal on their 5th studio album.
Passion ,aggression , melodies it’s all there and they don’t just play fast, Equaminity’ leaves room for the listeners to breathe with their excellent melodic guitar breaks while waiting for the trashy attacks. It’s also pure heavy metal at times and it’s impossible not to like it.

The thing about Equaminity is that you can still hear it’s Arvas.

This time their skills really reveals how powerful this band really is and finally the guitar skills really lift up the whole album.

This will truly appeal to old and new metal fans. 

The tracks are nicely composed and when you suddenly think that the coming part is going to fuck up the tracks it does the opposite and leave the listener with a smile wanting more.

‘Equanimity’  varies all the time with fast and more slowly tracks.

I honestly love this album and the majority of tracks are great.

A synth is barely used on a few tracks but it’s smoothly done and give an extra little touch without being synth driven. 

If I had to point out some tracks to listen to it would have to be the powerful track ‘My Devil’ which has it all. The intro itself will take you to wherever your imagination gets you.

‘Carven’ is another gem to check out!

I could mention more but you should listen to ‘Equaminity’  as it’s straightforward and honest metal without compromises.

I rest my case here and give lots of credits to ARVAS for releasing ‘Equaminity’’.

Truly the best and most powerful release by ARVAS ever. 

‘Equanimity’ really shows how talented this band is and I love that the guitars are more in the frontline now!

Give this album a chance even if you didn’t like ARVAS before you’re in for one hell of a ride and I hope they continue on this great path.

As a metal head I can honestly recommend this album with great pleasure!

Just fuck off & listen!

MORTEM ‘Ravnsvart' Review

Dark,melodic,mystical & dramatic black metal is some of the words that come to mind when listening to this haunting album that was released decades after they broke up. Now they have reunited, if it was worth it or not you’ll find my views on if you read further...

For those not familiar with MORTEM they released a demo ‘Slow Death’ back in 1988 and a 7" which was quite good for the time being that gained a cult status amongst many in the underground scene.

Musically it could be described as death metal, but with some interesting and unusual elements of what was typical back then.

It’s impossible not to think of Arcturus while listening to this of obvious reasons.

That being said ‘Ravnsvart’ has strong enough material to stand on its own feet.

MORTEM are also slightly more raw than Arcturus were in their earlier days.

The album reveals more when you have listened a couple of times.

Musically this album is thigh,powerful and the synths does an excellent job with it’s medieval sounds to set the overall experience of ‘Ravnsvart’

If I had to point out a negative thing about ‘Ravnsvart’ it would be that I don’t really recall any of the songs if I had to separate them from each other.

This view changed after a few more listens though.

I have to add that now that I have listened to ‘Ravnsvart’ even more times and with a few breaks from it ,it’s getting easier to digest and I’m actually able to to remember most tracks individually. 

So it certainly grows on me as a listener after all. 

As most of you know, the albums that are not totally revealing themselves at first listen often tend to give the listeners the best experience in the long run and also value for the money spent.

There is a beauty to ‘Ravnsvart’ that is impossible not to like if you’re into this genre of metal and the sound of the overall production is very much like the one Arcturus had on their ‘Constellation’ EP with in my opinion was their best release and the sound is one of the main reasons for that. 

For me personally some of the mysticism disappeared on their debut ‘Aspera Hiems Symphonia’

To cut it short I very much appreciate the sound they’ve captured on this album. It sounds old (not as in badly or lo-fi production), but at the same time the production is flawless,very suitable and not overproduced.

I’d strongly recommend ‘Ravnsvart’ as a whole album as it’s surely one of the most solid,interesting and nostalgic experiences I’ve had in a while and without any weak tracks overall.

I was somewhat skeptical about if it was worth the wait and money I’d paid for the vinyl. Possibly due to high expectations since it’s their first release in 30 years and me being quite picky when actually buying stuff today.

I can luckily assure you that I had no reason to be when the music finally revealed itself...

If you are looking for something “new” whatever that means these days or for some reason don’t like synths in metal this is probably not worth it. It sure won’t hurt giving it a try though.

If ‘Ravnsvart’ will gain a cult status this time only time will tell, it’s one hell of an album though.

Personally I get the most out of ‘Ravnsvart’ when listening to the whole album as a concept album

It will drag you on a journey through ancient  Norwegian folklore,roots,forgotten realms and beautiful landscapes. Impossible to find elsewhere unless seek it.

"When we were planning the songs for the EP, we knew we wanted to include a cover. We wanted something that hadn't already been covered several times, but also something that was a really familiar song. We also wanted something that wasn't right in our genre, so we could change it and make it our own. We started working on this before Tom died: in fact it was just during the mastering stage that we heard the news. It was one of those moments where you remember exactly where you were when the news came on the radio: I was on my way home from the Midwest US at a gas station somewhere west of Chicago. It was an incredible coincidence that this song had taken such an important role in our lives by then so the news came as quite a shock. And the song sure means a lot more to us now."

SANHEDRIN Releasing Sophomore Album 'The Poisoner' on Cruz Del Sur Music in February

Brooklyn metallers SANHEDRIN will release their sophomore album, The Poisoner, on February 22 via Cruz Del Sur Music. Recorded in August and September of this year at Menegroth, The Thousand Caves with Colin Marston at the helm, The Poisoner features eight songs of timeless, classy heavy metal that picks up where the band's acclaimed A Funeral For The World debut left off, with an array of big riffs, catchy vocals and explorations into darker territory than before. "We had no idea how that record would be received when we released it," begins guitarist Jeremy Sosville, also of BLACK ANVIL. "We knew we were proud of it, but the response from the greater public was quite surprising and humbling. Since then, we've been able to play some great shows and really learn what makes our band unique and build on that." SANHEDRIN, who also feature former AMBER ASYLUM and LOST GOATvocalist/bassist Erica Stoltz and drummer Nathan Honor, used ideas that date back to the formation of the band for The Poisoner in addition to songs that were written around the time of A Funeral For The World's release. The overriding goal, however, was to have an album ready in time for their European live debut next March alongside labelmates GATEKEEPER. "I think all three of us progressed quite a bit as individual players as well as learning to maximize our roles as a collective," says Sosville. "The approach is unique for every song, but it normally starts with me bringing in some riffs that work well together. Erica usually comes up with a vocal line and all three of us convene until we're all happy with the final result. A very important aspect we pay attention to is how all the songs flow together. It's a crucial element to any great record. We certainly did not want to write the same album a second time but we did not want to forsake what makes us SANHEDRIN either. Overall, I think this record is a little darker and a little meaner. A distinctive element of SANHEDRIN is their thought-provoking lyrics, many of which that go deeper than metal's often fantasy and allegory-based themes. On The Poisoner, SANHEDRIN addresses real-world themes that can be seen virtually every day in the news. "A lot of the album is about the destructive and chaotic side of human nature," says Stoltz. "The thirst for power, living in a world slipping into a surreal soup of archaic ideas and advanced technology." After an active 2018 that saw SANHEDRIN share the stage with the likes of EYEHATEGOD, THE OBSESSED, CAULDRON, WITCH MOUNTAIN and SABBATH ASSEMBLY (among others), the band is preparing for an even bigger live assault in 2019 behind The Poisoner. "I hope that the people who support us already are as proud of this record as we are and that we can gain some new supporters with this new material," wraps Sosville. "We work really hard to make music we believe in, so it's gratifying when you can reach more people with it and bring them along for the journey. We're not the biggest band out there, but the people who do follow us have been extremely positive and supportive. We're really grateful for that. The story:
