Acheron hailing from Tampa/US should be well known name to those who have been in the Metal scene for a while.
They started up in 1988, released a couple of Demos & splits and in 1992 they released their first album ‘The Rites Of The Black Mass’ which is a blasphemous work of dark satanic thrashing death metal with no compromises!
They were actually members of Church Of Satan back in the days, but left due to unknown reasons.Acheron officially split up in 2019 , I received the promo for this one a long time ago.Anyhow I wanna write some words on this nostalgic piece of shit.
The Rites Of The Black Mass contains dark and brutal Satan worshipping metal like Morbid Angel/Deicide/Obituary/Blasphemy/Deicide and the rest of the TAMPA clan.
Most of the tracks start with a dark & obscure synth intro to get that dark/eerie sound that was typical for many bands back then.Unlike many other bands that existed back then Acheron actually made good and entertaining music.
I always considered them to be a "cult" band because they were not well known like the other bands from the same time and place, but they were always featured in A4 ,black and white, cut ‘n paste zines. It was through such zines I got to know them.
It’s really hard writing about this release since I’ve heard it many years ago but it’s still a great album and I’d recommend’The Rites Of The Black Mass to those who like dark,brutal Satanic black metal.
This is actually the real deal which many bands are trying to capture today. I think it’s released by Listenable Records.
